Methanotrophic Bacteria

Updated: Jan 17, 2023

Methane-utilizing bacterias (methanotrophs/methanophiles are prokaryotes that metabolize carbon and methane as energy sources. Methanotrophic bios can be bacteria or archaea and can grow aerobically (using oxygen) or anaerobically (not using oxygen) and require one-carbon compounds (e.g. methane) to survive(3)/(8).

This group is a member of the gram-negative bacteria group which is bisected by the gram staining (a method of Hans Christian Gram, which provides a clear observation chance to analyze two large bacteria groups). Gram especially developed this method to pave the way for scientific developments and he stated that his method also includes some mistakes(9). Gram stain is an empirical(It is to classify bios based on their appearance and the environment in which they live. This type of classification has lost its validity today.) method used to classify bacteria into two large groups (Gram-positive, Gram-negative) based on the chemical and physical properties of their cell walls. Gram-negative bacteria are bacteria that do not retain the crystal violet stain (Crystal violet or gentian purple; It is a histological stain, also known as hexamethyl pararosaniline chloride or methyl violet 10B, and a triarylmethane dye used to classify bacteria in the Gram stain method.) during the Gram staining procedure. Gram-positive bacteria continue to retain the blue color after washing with alcohol, while Gram-negative bacteria lose the blue color.

During the Gram staining steps, a different separation method is used after the crystal violet rays. This stain stains Gram-negative bacteria a red-pink color. Thanks to this test, it becomes extremely easy to distinguish between two types of bacteria, which are very different in the type of cell walls. Most Gram-negative bacterias are pathogenic (That is, they can cause disease in humans). This disease-causing ability is due to certain properties of the Gram-negative cell wall, to name the content of LPS (lipopolysaccharide) because LPSs are endotoxins(2).

Climate change or Global warming is the change in the climate of the world due to the increase in the average temperatures measured in the land, sea, and air throughout the year, as a result of the greenhouse effect, which is thought to be caused by the greenhouse gasses released into the atmosphere, which is formed by the increase in the heat-trapping gasses such as carbon dioxide(7). Today, all people, especially climate scientists, are expressing that they should take various measures to prevent global warming. This is the last state of the world in the 21st century, especially due to the substances used by people that emit harmful gasses to the environment in various ways of various chemicals thrown into the environment in all ecosystems(4). Also, The main reasons for this result are the increase in chemicals used in agricultural production or consumption, excessive unconscious activities in industrial activities or excessive increase in industrial production, and the lack of sensitivity to prevent the release of harmful gasses. These climatic changes include drought, desertification, imbalances and deviations in precipitation, floods, typhoons, storms, tornadoes, etc. It manifests itself with symptoms such as increases in meteorological events(5).

The most important thing to do to prevent this situation from getting worse is to maintain order in the material cycles that provide the balance between ecosystems. This is where methanotrophic bacteria, which are involved in the methane cycle, come into play to maintain the balance in the atmosphere. This bacterium, which metabolizes methane in its body, both maintains its own life and prevents the release of excess methane into the atmosphere with this gas it consumes(1)/(8).

As a result, We can restore the balance that we have disturbed in nature by getting help from bios in nature. However, we need to be aware of this.
